Satellite radio has been around for nearly 2 decades now. It started out as 2 separate companies XM & Sirius (both of which had different names prior to their lunch) whom FCC approved rules in 1997 creating the satellite radio industry consisting solely of these two licensees. Those rules included prohibiting one licensee from acquiring control of another and require these to companies to design their devices to be interoperable with one another service.

Sirius & XM merged to form the new SIRIUSXM

Those 2 satellite radio companies announced their merger in 2007 to form what we now know today as SIRIUSXM. SIRIUSXM owns and

operates both Sirius and XM Radio as two independent companies with parallel programming that’s quite similar. The primary difference being that both companies presently have exclusivity agreements with vehicle manufacturers for respective service through either XM or SIRIUS. A Sirius receiver often times won’t work with XM Service and vice vs. There are a few exceptions to this.

The SIRIUSXM satellite system consists of three in-orbit satellites, approximately 120 terrestrial repeaters that receive and retransmit

signals, satellite uplink facilities and studios. The XM system consists of four in-orbit satellites, over 700 terrestrial repeaters that receive and retransmit signals, satellite uplink facilities and studios. Currently SiriusXM commands the largest digital radio facility of its kind in the country with 82 end-to-end fiber-optic programming and broadcast studios at XM headquarters in the heart of Washington, DC. They broadcast over 150 digital stations, with commercial free programming available, from 4 studios in Washington, DC; Nashville, TN; and 2 in New York.

Satellite radio revolutionized the way that we listen to music. They were one of the first companies to bring true digital sound in vehicles and homes without the static and commercials found on most standard radio stations. Today, SiriusXM. Satellite radio isn’t just confined to in vehicle entertainment. SiriusXM programming can be accessed in car, home, online, from smart phones and even other personal computing devices. Even though both Sirius & XM continue to operate as seperate companies, customers may pay upgrade to get the best programming from both services.

How is satellite radio programming different from traditional radio programming?

The biggest difference is that SIRIUSXM has 100% commercial-free music channels available. What this means for you is that SiriusXM offer you music the way it should be and the way the artist intended it: without a single commercial interruption. The music programming also has a breadth and depth of programming basically unavailable on regular radio. They play the songs that you know and love, and many songs that they believe you’ll love when you hear them for the first time. There are also loads of original programming with either company. Both Sirius and XM host hundreds of exclusive live interviews and performances you won’t hear anywhere else and produce many interesting and engaging live talk shows in our national broadcast studios.

There are currently several types of receivers available to consumers:

  • Plug and Play receivers:The receiver snaps in to a base unit, which provides power, antenna, and audio connections. Multiple base units can be installed in the home or car, and portable boom-box style units allow the plug and play receivers to be used outdoors. This is typically the least expensive option and will work with both Factory and Aftermarket Radios.

There are alot of options for SIRIUSXM radio

We offer a SIRIUS / XM satellite radio solution for every application.

  • Portable personal systems:XM has offered portability kits for various receivers in the past. It also currently offers the Helix and Inno, which are self-contained and can play both live XM and recorded content with no external antennas. Sirius has offered their stiletto system for their subscribers that function the same way as the Helix/Inno but are not interchangeable.
  • In-dash receivers: These are integrated with a car’s stereo system. Many factory stereo systems include XM or Sirius radio, and the more popular aftermarket stereo brands all have options to connect satellite radio receivers.
  • Aftermarket Add-on receivers: Most aftermarket car stereo manufacturers have begun making their Car Radios “SAT READY” meaning that they are able to accommodate either a SIRIUS or XM Tuner offering full control of one, or both services through your aftermarket car stereo system.
